What is AVMR?
AVMR is a program of intensive instruction of number concepts: Structuring Numbers (in a Base Ten System)/ Addition and Subtraction, Place Value, and/ or Multiplication and Division.
What is the concept behind AVMR?
AVMR was designed initially for prevention purposes in the elementary years. At the middle school level, it is used to assess gaps in knowledge and provide students with targeted instruction. The idea is that, often in the early grades, students are not given enough time to “sit” with a concept. They are pushed quickly from a limited conceptual understanding to fact memorization and standard algorithms. When memory fails or when a problem does not lend itself well to the standard algorithm, students tend to fall apart due to inflexible thinking. AVMR works to provide more time with conceptual understanding within the foundational aspects of our numbers system, enhance flexible thinking in math, and encourage efficient mental math strategies.
How does AVMR work?
Students in Math Lab are given the oral AVMR assessments for Structuring Numbers/ Addition and Subtraction, Place Value and/or Multiplication and Division. If needs arise in one or more of these areas, students are then grouped with other students who have similar needs and are given targeted instruction for 20 minutes. The other half of the period they will be in their Math Lab with their grade level math teacher. Small groups are flexible depending on needs shown on assessments and progress/ growth in their group.
Why do I use AVMR?
AVMR gives me a chance to meet a student where he or she is at. It helps build confidence and allows for great mathematical learning and discussions. It is motivating and engaging, and aims to support grade-level achievement by throwing it back to the basics.
We love new projects!
